Wondering and wandering

Those of you who have been wondering where I have been, I've been quite busy. Things are only going to get busier. I have returned to full time employment, I will be moving to a new house in about five weeks, and will be dealing with all the stuff that comes with that. I have lived in my present house for 21 years, so I have a lot of stuff to move. I have been diddling with sounds and such a bit, but nothing worthy to be posted here.

So I am informing you all that I am going to take a hiatus from TG for awhile. Probably most of the summer. I will be on seasonal unemployment in the Fall, and things should have quieted down in real life by then.

I plan on posting some new Halloween themed songs and even have some ideas for that particular holiday. so if you don't see me around, you know why. --Zebra Mann

Vocoder, Everglades, DS-8, & Chant: Amphibian Phashionettes

Four orchestrated promenades through conscious dreams of unlit swamps. Recommended soundtrack for long road trips where the traffic is sparse and the road signs are few. Also good for painting dark aquamarine on canvass.

Guitar Tunings Database

The Guitar Tunings DB has over 100 online guitar tuners. All guitar alternate tuners have their own page. Each guitar tuner page links to Chord and Scale charts and respective song lists which use the guitar tuner. This is really pretty amazing how deep this resource goes. --The Tapegerm Collective

PAiA DIY music electronics

PAiA has been in business since the early 1970's producing high quality music electronics, from bare-bones kits to completely assembled products. My first synthesizer hardware was from them, wayyy back around 1974 and I still have a number of their products in my synthesizer "studio". Even if you have never handled a soldering iron and don't intend to, their site is worth visiting just for browsing. I highly recommend them. Also: I would rate their customer service A+++. --David Fuglewicz

Zombie for Love

Ok, so I haven't done much here for too long. Back today with a new composition in tandem with long-time 'germ star collaborator The Dave. Let it Blood.

And what have I been doing? So much that I can't hardly write it all here. A healthy smattering of Tapegerm output on my new online release UNROCK on Electronic Musik. A whole pile of new work with Don Tyler (see link) and new work with The Dave coming soon.

Meanwhile the debut Carbon Manual album is underway in its mixing. And my beloved Barracudas are playing Tokyo, and Italian festivals, soon. --Jeremy Gluck

Open Music Labs

The goal of Open Music Labs is to create a central web location where people who are interested in using analog and digital audio equipment can go to find ideas, histories, parts, and like-minded others.

We want to create a resource that people can use to share ideas and learn new ideas about hands-on audio creation, manipulation, and interaction.

Open Music Labs is a subsidiary of Sparkfactor Design (no relation to Sparkfun, though we are big fans!) --The Tapegerm Collective

Dave's Production Basics #1

Programs used
Audio Editing: Sound Forge 4.5
Looper/Tracker: Acid 3.0
You'll have to interpret for your individual programs
I am going to show how to make a sound file seem fuller or have more presence.
First start with the sound file how-to_1-1.wav. It has a decent sound to it, a nice spread in the frequency spectrum and is a stereo file .
1) Load the file in your audio editor.
http://www.davefuglewicz.com/howto/01/how-to_1-01.jpg
2) Create two new mono files.
http://www.davefuglewicz.com/howto/01/how-to_1-02.jpg
http://www.davefuglewicz.com/howto/01/how-to_1-03.jpg
3) Select All of the left channel of how-to_1-1.wav and copy to the clipboard (CTRL-C).
http://www.davefuglewicz.com/howto/01/how-to_1-04.jpg
4) Click on one of the new files and do a Paste (CTRL-V).
http://www.davefuglewicz.com/howto/01/how-to_1-05.jpg
5) Save the file as how-to_1-1_left.wav.
http://www.davefuglewicz.com/howto/01/how-to_1-06.jpg
6) Repeat this for the right channel creating how-to_1-1_right.wav
7) Now there are three sound files
8 ) The two mono files can be modified with effects. There are many possible effects that can be added: chorus, echo, flange, distortion, graphic equalization. For the sake of simplicity, I'll describe how I add
echo. When I add echo like this, I won't include any of the original source, it will just be the modified sounds. I also save the file to a new name; how-to_1-1_left_echo.wav. Every time I modify a file I save it to a new name as a way to back up my files as I work with them.
http://www.davefuglewicz.com/howto/01/how-to_1-07.jpg
9) Now I have the original sound file, a mono-left-echo file and a mono-right-echo file. I'll load all three into my looping program, (I use Acid 3.0). The mono-echo files will have their volume set from -3 to -6 db lower then the original. Then I'll add panning to the mono files, from full left to full right. The two files will almost mirror each other, I intentionally offset the "mirror" points to introduce some randomness.
http://www.davefuglewicz.com/howto/01/how-to_1-08.jpg
10) This process can be repeated with different effects. On some of my compositions I'll have more than one iteration of this technique, I adjust the sound levels so some of the effects are very subtle and not very audible, they might be -10 db less than the original files. However, when all these add up it really thickens the sound and gives it real good presence.

New Sources files

In 1990 I composed a piece called "Every Electric Part Of You" releasing it in 1992 on a cassette album of the same name. While reviewing unreleased material of that era, for inclusion on my forthcoming posting of that cassette album to archive.org I came across the first version of "Every Electric Part Of You", which included quite a few segments from a sound effects record I had. I decided against developing it further because of the copyright issue and wanting to be all "me". Over the past couple nights I have created some source files that are all me from that first version and have posted them to the Sources page at Tapegerm.com. Number five features one if the rare occasions where I play guitar. Go get them and do something. --David Fuglewicz

For Fans Of Frippish Homage... Obscured By Dolls

All sounds generated by electronic guitar or fed through electronic guitar pickups (no synthesizers). A variety of electronic sound effects, including a loop duplicator, orchestrate improvised tone phrases into ever-building washes of layered sonority. In essence, each piece starts as a minimalist drip and gradually morphs into the audio equivalent of the spray from a wide-open faucet.

The audio tools employed to create these recordings include:

Reflector Stratocaster Electronic Guitar
Electronic Guitar Sound Effect Pedals
Electronic Sound Generators (Toys, Vibrators)
Guitar Preparations (Beaver Jaw, Arrow Head, Chromium Slide, Music Box, Fishing Lure, Etc.)
Yamaha FX 500 Effects Unit
Boss RC 20X Loop Station Loop Duplicator

B. Serrano's free VST's

B. Serrano has authored some amazing VST's that are available for free. I have used/am using six of the VST's for the last month or so and I wholeheartedly recommend them. They are very versatile and the user interface is very easy to use. My favorite (so far) is the Adonis VST. I think it comes very close to the sound of an ARP 2600. I should know, I have owned a 2600 for about thirty years. Go get some. --David Fuglewicz

the Purpose Project = Awesome

I just have to say, Dave Fuglewicz's Purpose Project is Magnificent! And the Purpose album is shaping up to be an entirely unique Tapegerm experience; one that showcases the distinct beauty underlying the Tapegerm collaboration mileau. For me, it is these kinds of projects where Tapegerm proves itself to be an uncommon collective of collaborators. The kind of project where the original sources are allowed to speak through varied artistic perspectives and an album of recordings plays like a new kind of multi-movement symphony and gathers a perspicuous theme that is present in each offering. It's the kind of project that entices you to add your own stroke -- so go do it, click on the link and be a part of it.

I can't wait to hear it. --Blind Mime
