Kamakura 28740 plays of 12 songs --> tapegerm home
Kamakura is the Internet performance name for a UK based Indie Artist whose addiction to playing with loops began in mid 2005.

Kamakura is also a band in the real world with a totally different take on music.

A Buzzy Tale

03:14
Genre: So Far Off The Wall It's Down The Street
Album: TBA

This is very silly, but I enjoyed it hugely.warning given ;)
This is a homage to all the 'Buzzies' out there, and a lot of shows including the goons, python, Little Britain, and many many more.
It is not really danceable ;)
Oh, and be warned, there might be more episodes...

Zen Variations

Genre: Abstract
Album: TBA

Our hero lives near the sea, and often walks along the beach when he has something to think about.. It always helps. As he walks the sounds that surround him are constantly changing, somethimes intrusively, sometimes not.

This is my first true mix, in that I just used loops without adding to them.

Track No 7.

World
1,427 plays
02:35
Genre: Alternative
Album: TBA

Don Campau I didn't know. Wallace Stevens I didn't know. Now I do, and I'm happier for the experience.

I'd always wanted to attempt a multiple harmony 'thing' and this seemed the perfect place to try it. All in all I'm happy, though this is top of my list of tracks to tweak when I get a moment.

The spoken word pieces were the muse food for this mix.

Mental Anguish
9,983 plays
02:20
Genre: Electronica
Album: TBA

I love the phrase Mental Anguish, It's so evocative (as are his loops) and I have also wanted to create a segue into and out of a radio piece ever since I fell in love with 'Wish you were here' by Pink Floyd.

So here is a marriage of the two. Syncronicity!

The radio bit, which I think works so well is not a mashup. It's just pure luck!

Zimbabwe
1,400 plays
03:46
Genre: Electronica
Album: TBA

I wrote this because of all the appalling things that are happening in Zimbabwe. Mugabe has obviously gone off his head, a whole country is suffering and yet the International community is doing NOTHING!

Why?

Anyway, this is my rather naive reaction, from the safety of a nice safe life.

You say I'm wrong
1,793 plays
03:16
Genre: Electronica
Album: TBA

Written and recorded for 24 hour Flu on 9th July 2005

This was my first 'introduction' to tapegerm, and for that I have to thank Heuristics Inc... Thanks.

I recorded this in a few panicked hours after work, and two days after the London Bombings, which is what the lyrics are about.

It seemed to go down quite well. ;)

"Awesome mix listening for the 4th time, had no chance to catch it last night. I did catch the hole in the wall mix though & hope to see it up on the site as well as I thought it was way cool as well."

"Grooving & bumping track, really like it, the lyrics are great & the singing is spot on cool, good voice and great vocal layering. You have a very cool & well done piece! Bravo!"

MA5 - New York
"MASTER: What have you left? Instead of answering him Jacques turned out every last pocket and searched himself with no sign of success. He had left the purse for their excursion under the head of his bed and not long after confessing this to his master he cried out, "To perdition with the tales of your loves! I've left my watch back by the chimney, hanging there!" Jacques turned his horse back, though not in a hurry and returned to...The big chateau? No, no. Back again homeward. A new Kamakura mix was available, and as with all the rest of us rushed to play it, in my case rather endlessly as befits this gem of Kamakura's manufacture. Bravo!"

Firstly I need some headspace, 'cause this going to work malarkey is getting me down. Then secondly I need to make some damn desicions about which samples to use. Sheesh I've got Gigabytes now, and, like a kid in a sweetshop I don't know where to start... It's all too much for such a little brain. Therapy beckons: "You're from Tapegerm?" "Yes." "Hmm. I'm seeing a lot of people from there at the moment." "Really?" "Yes, and frankly it's not suprising. It's a new syndrome I'm calling 'Heuristically Cystematic Mental Anguish'. Unfortunately, like Loopitis, there's no cure. " "Damn."

So. Where was I? Ah yes. Blogging

I could spend all day playing here. However the real world Kamakura is trying to take off, and the other half, Mick Dorey (Mick Dorey and the Sirens-'Paranoia Station' Illegal Records) gets angsty when I tell him I'm off doing Tapegerm stuff. It's odd. When I began (as a drummer) I was totally in Mick's shadow. Now I'm not, which is good, though I still find it hard to believe him when he tells me so. I want to write a musical, and another part to the Buzzy Tales muse permitting. Oh and now I have a HUGE quantity of drum loops (Omnitechnomatrix) and more Mental Anguish Loops and... Never enough hours in the day!

I uploaded a re-mixed version of this today. The vocal beds better, it's smother, and it's probably as it should have been if I wasn't so impatient!

I looked at stats today (as you do) and was blown away to find that over 2000 people have listened to my stuff. So thank you to each and every one of you. Who are these people I wonder That download or stream my stuff Do they know who they're listening too? If they do then I'm really chuffed Though I'm probably wrong I'll choose to surmise They're very nice people, incredibly wise; Who shop at versace and smell of channel And love Kamakura 'cause he's cute and he's swell... Oh hell. I just wish I damn well knew who they were Total strangers abound question marks all around And when they listen what on earth do they think Do they laugh? do they feel? do they get what I mean? Or do they think SHIT! And move on to new tracks If I don’t find out soon I think I might crack. And there is the rub. I'll never know!

G-Day! And fun was had by all.
posted: 06 Oct 2005 09:50 AM

G-Day was big fun. I was amazed that so many good loops were created in such a short period of time, and as always I found it really hard to decide what to do. As it started band on midnight UK time I played my cards cannily and went to bed instead. Waking up after a refreshing eight hours I immediately went back to bed. Finally I got up and booted up the mac to find it didn't recognise its keyboard. A royal pain. So downloaded all the loops on the pc and started to play with Fruity loops. Nada. Dumped the loops and thought again. Muse said 'Balloons' and so it started...

A Buzzy Tale

This was odd, and I don't mean he arrived at the opera wearing a pink tu-tu rather than a dinner jacket odd: I mean I wasn't sure if it would only be amusing to me. Luckily others seem to have been mildly entertained as well, which is, I have to say, good! Cystem suggested I carry on, and though I had thought in a rather abstract way about a serial, it wasn't serious. Now? who knows. I can see Buzzy doing a lot of rather wonderful and weird things, but first of all he has to escape the revolution in Mexico..

Don Campau loops 'n' all
posted: 07 Sep 2005 04:50 AM

So far I've used Don's loops and the poetry of Wallace Stevens on two tracks:' World', and 'Zen Variations'. 'World' streched me in that it started out as an experiment to see if I could put together a five part harmony that worked. It seemed to, and it just kept going. However I wish I had spent more time on it. The mix needs... something. 'Zen Variations' was my idea of a walk on a busy yet empty beach. You're deep in thought, but extraneous sounds keep bleeding in from places you pass. This is the only piece I haven't added to vocally.

Hmm. A point to ponder

You can change the order of the songs that appear on your web page. This is a useful thing, but makes me wonder if it's better to leave well alone with the newest track being added at the bottom, or have the newest track at the top... Does it really matter? Note to self: Get a therapist.

This is the fifth song I've created/written at Tapegerm and It's short one coming in at 2.20. I was going to carry on working it, but I think it's got to where it's going... and I have to stop using the word 'Pandemic' in lyrics. This is an amazing place really when you think about it, and I'm thoroughly enjoying the experience of using loops. Mental Anguish's loops ROCK... Then so have all the ones I've used. Cystem's made 'Zimbabwe' what it is and it couldn't have been written without them. The only ones that have stumped me to date have been the Rootsy Records Djembe set. Still, I live in hope. So many loops, so little time!

This is really a test to see what 'create a message' does, and, rather like 'my first Doctors kit', I'm not entirely sure what to do with the stethoscope.
