The mere thought of torrid, tropical climes drove deep into Montesquieu as he scrawled out the landmark The Spirit of the Laws on the various governments of the world; he sweated and flushed and and trembled frequently until at length quill pen had to be surrendered for a handkerchief. Enough of this and the need for a stern mastery over this debility was translated into the need of the clime for a stern master. Eventually cold will be discovered to cause shivering too.
