Alva was very eager to try out his new armour, pounded out of invincibility and tribute levied across Holland, and it served well, flushing the colour of Inqusitions and autos-de-fes and seeking to refine its shape by the involuntary donation of ducats and guilders. All continued to go very well until the denizens of Alkmaar decided that Dutch courage was something to be very greatly extended, striking Alvan armour back and causing a return to Spain. The concluding echo continues until at least the ship is in sight of the port of Cadiz.
