The Don Campau Project, Vol. 2

Born in 1952, Campau began recording in 1969 with the legendary Bay Area avant garde group, The Roots Of Madness. The Roots recorded an LP in 1971 and many open reel tapes as albums now being re-issued on CDR. In 1976, he started 4 track recording with his friend, Greg Gray and later went on to form The Desmonds, a punk band, with Greg and Joe Menichetti. In 1981, he got his own 4 track and has been cranking out the home recordings ever since. Campau also hosts the long running home taper and independent radio program, NO PIGEONHOLES, on KKUP, 91.5FM throughout the SF and Monterey Bay Areas.

You Think It's A Free Country
The title of this mix was inspired by a yelling match I had a few days ago with a Memphis Police Officer. See we had gone out to eat some chinese & when done Tawnya & Bela went inside a wig & beauty store, my two boys Grahm (Fats) & Eli were still in the chinese joint. So I sat on the curb & took a smoke & conducted buisness on my cell phone. The boys came out & bumped me I nodded & thought they went inside the wig store. When done with buisness I looked down the outer concourse & Fats & Eli were 8 stores down near Kroger. I yelled come on let's go of which they did not hear. Tawnya & Bela (Colorful Octopus) came out & Bela took off running after them sack in hand. Tawyna texted Fats to come on & Bela, Eli & Fats came out of the entrance to Kroger & two stores up took off running. A cop came out running after them & caught Bela & threw her against the wall as we were yelling for him to stop. Anyways things got heated he claimed he thought they were stealing from the store. He told me to shut up not once but twice to which I replied back "You shut up & look in the sack & see whats in it & yes we have the receipt." He said I needed to shut up again after I told him if he wanted me to quit yelling then he should. He said it again to which I replied " It's a free country" In return he said "You Think it's A Free Country" So thats the gist of it all. We all walked off pissed needless to say. I took one of the first fluxus fone contributions and built some loops and live improvised bass round it. My first time working with SoundHack came up with an interesting loop merging a strummed acoustic guitar with a vocal which repeats offset with the flute melody throughout the song. I also used Dan Richert's bent Casio loops, taking a few percussion hits and building the percussion track piece by piece together with a classic loop from longtime supporting tapegerm artist Mike McGary. The bloopy synth bass sounding element is me playing live improvised bass guitar through a Bass Pod effects box. Check out the fluxus!

A young man and his girlfriend were traveling west on I-80 in a rented U-Haul moving van full of their belongings, going to new digs in Colorado. Then it happened. They were pulled into an errant black hole that had blithely wandered into traffic. This mix is the only known record of the event those two young people encountered in the flatlands of Nebraska, as no one knows where the other other side of a black hole leads to.

Three Chances to Dream
Somniphobia is the fear of sleep or of being unconscious, Oneirophobia is the fear of dreaming, and Arachibutyrophobia is the fear of peanut butter sticking to the roof of your mouth. The last one doesn't really go with the other two, but I couldn't pass up adding it to the list. Our fears know no bounds, and for everything there is in the world, there is someone with an irrational fear of it. This is the third mix in my Dream Journey series, and as usual, it is ear goggle friendly. I took one of the first fluxus fone contributions and built some loops and live improvised bass round it. My first time working with SoundHack came up with an interesting loop merging a strummed acoustic guitar with a vocal which repeats offset with the flute melody throughout the song. I also used Dan Richert's bent Casio loops, taking a few percussion hits and building the percussion track piece by piece together with a classic loop from longtime supporting tapegerm artist Mike McGary. The bloopy synth bass sounding element is me playing live improvised bass guitar through a Bass Pod effects box. Check out the fluxus! Having another person interpret your dreams is sort of like letting them try on your socks while you are still wearing them. Whether you believe that dreams are a way for you to communicate with your subconscious as Jung suggested, that they are merely wish fulfillment as Freud stated, or that they are simply images that your mind uses to sort out the day's events, no one really knows what they are for or why our brain creates them. No matter what purpose they truly serve, the darn things sometimes have a tendency to screw up a really good night's sleep. Four Reasons to Dream
There are many types of dreams that invade our sleep. I rarely remember the happy ones. The worst are the recurring nightmares. I have no problem remembering those. There is one where a creature I call a demon comes to visit me on a mission of mischief. I do not call it a demon because of its' appearance, but because of its malevolence. It comes for me through a rift in space, slinking through a veiled doorway between its' universe and mine. With grasping claws and gnashing teeth, it tries to drag me away from all that I hold dear. I usually wake up just before it succeeds in doing so, and then I get up from my bed, for I know that sleep is no longer an option. All I can do is to turn on the lights and wait for the sunrise. The Don Campau Project, Vol. 1

Born in 1952, Campau began recording in 1969 with the legendary Bay Area avant garde group, The Roots Of Madness. The Roots recorded an LP in 1971 and many open reel tapes as albums now being re-issued on CDR. In 1976, he started 4 track recording with his friend, Greg Gray and later went on to form The Desmonds, a punk band, with Greg and Joe Menichetti. In 1981, he got his own 4 track and has been cranking out the home recordings ever since. Campau also hosts the long running home taper and independent radio program, NO PIGEONHOLES, on KKUP, 91.5FM throughout the SF and Monterey Bay Areas.

I took one of the first fluxus fone contributions and built some loops and live improvised bass round it. My first time working with SoundHack came up with an interesting loop merging a strummed acoustic guitar with a vocal which repeats offset with the flute melody throughout the song. I also used Dan Richert's bent Casio loops, taking a few percussion hits and building the percussion track piece by piece together with a classic loop from longtime supporting tapegerm artist Mike McGary. The bloopy synth bass sounding element is me playing live improvised bass guitar through a Bass Pod effects box. Check out the fluxus! The title of this mix was inspired by a yelling match I had a few days ago with a Memphis Police Officer. See we had gone out to eat some chinese & when done Tawnya & Bela went inside a wig & beauty store, my two boys Grahm (Fats) & Eli were still in the chinese joint. So I sat on the curb & took a smoke & conducted buisness on my cell phone. The boys came out & bumped me I nodded & thought they went inside the wig store. When done with buisness I looked down the outer concourse & Fats & Eli were 8 stores down near Kroger. I yelled come on let's go of which they did not hear. Tawnya & Bela (Colorful Octopus) came out & Bela took off running after them sack in hand. Tawyna texted Fats to come on & Bela, Eli & Fats came out of the entrance to Kroger & two stores up took off running. A cop came out running after them & caught Bela & threw her against the wall as we were yelling for him to stop. Anyways things got heated he claimed he thought they were stealing from the store. He told me to shut up not once but twice to which I replied back "You shut up & look in the sack & see whats in it & yes we have the receipt." He said I needed to shut up again after I told him if he wanted me to quit yelling then he should. He said it again to which I replied " It's a free country" In return he said "You Think it's A Free Country" So thats the gist of it all. We all walked off pissed needless to say. The Mountains of Madness 1 - Quest
This series of mixes are based on the short novel "At the Mountains of Madness" by H.P. Lovecraft. This first selection describes the journey of the author and Danforth across the mountains, up the river valley and into the ancient city of the Old Ones. There, they begin the historical and scientific examination of the nameless beings and terrible gods that once ruled the earth from that place. The two men journey deeper into the labyrinth of caves and tunnels under the terrible city, and in a place where no other living being has walked for over a million years, they begin to hear sounds they cannot explain. These two men are convinced that they are all alone, and surmise that what they hear is simply the echo and re-echo of their footfalls and voices in this place; the sound of the wind howling through tunnels and caverns, or maybe just their imaginations playing tricks on them. There is no one else for a thousand miles in any direction, and such a sense of loneliness would likely affect even the minds of skeptics and scientists, would it not? The rash and imprudent motions of the archeologists and historians of that Institute upon the Unter den Linden, are seen to continue in their motions and their operations that still draw forth musical relics of the race of Stückwerke from the sandy ground of Brandenburg. The latest recovery is a of a more recent vintage, derived of the age of railways, of Isms overspreading Europe and the tenure of Von Bismarck in Prussia. The composition was composed in a fated, inevitable spirit guided by the sure Laws of History. The yet mild von Bismarck gave ear to the piece during a concert on the Wilhelmstrasse and it was certain he was affected. Soon the ghastly battles of Sadowa and Sedan ensued, Paris besieged and Bismarck suddenly feared and Prussia hated. What followed is too well known. This infection was manifested thus: 1) A 30-minute-long recording from April 22nd, 2010 (one of several recorded rehearsals for a performance at the Denver Noise Fest), was cleaned and divided into several parts of unequal length. 2) The several parts were all randomly distributed over several overlapping tracks on a computer recording program grid. The overall length of the mix was reduced from 30 minutes to about 10 minutes. 3) Several Hannah Galli vocal loops were added to the recording grid, each on its own track, each looped 10 times and positioned at regular 30-second intervals. 4) A Swami Loopynanda/Carpet Glue Unlimited loop was reproduced 10 times, and each of the 10 loops was placed at strategic positions in the recording grid. 5) The whole was mixed together. The Mountains of Madness 2 - Discovery
As the two scientists follow the trail of sculpture and cryptographs carved into the walls of the tunnels and caves beneath those haunted mountains, they discover secrets in an underground city where no one has trod for over a million years. They read the legends carved upon the living rock, and venture ever deeper into the depths. As they follow the paths of the Old Ones, they begin to hear sounds that cannot be attributed to mere echoes and howling winds. The two scientists sense danger ahead, and their fear is great, but their curiosity is greater. Just as each step takes them further into the Stygian darkness, every flash of their torches upon the carved stones teaches them a little more about the long-forgotten race of beings known only as the Old Ones. At last they reach a seemingly endless underground sea, and looking beneath its still surface, at the bottom of its crystal-clear depths, there lies a vast city upon the bottom. The city is easy to see, for its walls, towers and turrets are clothed in ghostly light; illuminated by the millions of tiny phosphorescent creatures that cover them. Our two adventurers gaze out upon the impossibility before them, and wonder if anyone might still live within the confines of that grand sunken city. The Mountains of Madness 3 - Pursuit
As the two scientists travel along the shore of the underground sea, they attempt to find a way to get closer to the sunken city, curious to study it in detail. Using their torches sparingly, they find a spur of rock that seems to form a bridge out over the water. Suddenly a large formless shadow blocks out a large portion of the glowing city. Immediately afterward, there is a splash as if something immense has come ashore. The two men shine their torches in the direction of the sound and just before the light fades out forever, they see a gigantic creature that defies explanation. It is a horrifying monstrosity to see, and the only thing worse than catching a brief glimpse of the beast with their lights, is now being alone in the darkness with it. Casting their useless torches down, the two men run towards the ramp that leads away from the underground sea. Terror fills their minds and they dash blindly away from the thing that pursues them. They instinctively seek a path upwards, for they know that safety must surely lie at the surface. They run until they are certain that their hearts will explode, trying to reach the surface before the beast catches up to them. Shaving 71 leads upon the approaches to Seville, then the enthusiasm of the Shaving 4123 prevails upon the confines of Madrid, yet is overtaken by the Shaving 986 as the roar of engines draws down upon Barcelona, thoughts already directing towards passing at superlative speed the Pyrenees at La Junquera and a night's rest at Rivesaltes. The unimaginable creature from the depths of that Stygian sea pursues the two scientists thru the inky darkness. The men succeed at first, whether it be pure luck or instinct, and correctly choose the right tunnels towards the surface. Neither dares look back to see how close the monster is, for to do so might cause them to stumble and find themselves at the mercy of its slavering jaws. With a shout of relief, they find their way to the surface, and to the waiting aeroplane that brought them here. This concludes the Mountains of Madness series of mixes. Do they get away from their pursuer? Does the beast catch them? Will they live to tell the tale? You, my patient listener, you get to write the ending. The passions of Shaving 11410 are greatly excited, distance between them is closed upon the sandy reaches of Mark Brandenburg and both maintain an equal pace, utterly oblivious that the Autobahn terminated before Sassnitz and land itself shortly thereafter. This is a serious mix. I rarely do serious pieces; I love a good laugh, and having a twisted sense of humor makes that easy for me. Most of my mixes are humorous, or based on Halloween themes. This one is scary, but not in the typical fun sense of that October holiday. This one is seriously frightening, because it contains a message of tragedy. Alighted upon the Saxon Isle, the inevitable course of Shavings rubber-shod foray led directly to the conurbation upon the Thames and a wrap of lanes that proved passingly endless and encouraged a duel of of the Shaving 44 and the Shaving 9945 over which might possess the greatest exhibition of a stalwart and indefatigable nature. At length Shaving 44 relented of its contention and exited again towards the confines of Canterbury and the destination of Calais, this time patient enough to await even a retrograde train through the Channel Tunnel. Passed the verdant wall of the Pyrenees, the contending and jostling Shavings, fleet on rubber and sweating pistons, descend upon the Autoroute in a tight gathering, a separation of the vying parties beyond all from Perpignan to Avignon. Shaving 7761 at length drew forward although this excited the passion and determination of Shaving 43, and they were united in position past the vines of Burgundy. Paris, smote by strike and barricades was by-passed and in the unsettled moment, Shaving 3 propelled forth upon Le Havre, and so determined to maintain its lead, neglected to remember the Channel Tunnel. The Skweeing Liquid was produced after the Gluck was harvested and brought to the nest. Broken down into nucleotidal polymorphisms, the Gluck was rearranged and stored into wave cells, which then reproduced and comingled over a Goffic substrate. After a lengthy swim that only Shavings might accomplish behind wheels over the waves of the Baltic, skirting past Bornholm and alighting with practiced grace upon Ystad, the contest resumes upon the Motorväg in the confines of Sweden and at last, all other impulses to victory rapidly flagging near Stockholm, Shaving 1 and 11502 foray northwards in a blur that discerns no leader nor admits advantage to either, and so eager and determined is their competition both neglect to fix attentions over the terminus of the Motorväg in the wilds north of Gävle. The inevitable tangle is intruded upon the massed and socially liberal Nordic cheers of the locality that salute all Shavings as winners and those who endured this series as perhaps something less.
