Rootsy Records
Traditional djembe drumming from the
Bamana ethnic group of West Africa

Rootsy Records was started in November of 1999 as a partnership between a teacher and a student. Jeremy Chevrier was the student and Abdoulaye Diakite was the teacher. Jeremy has had an intense passion for West African djembe drumming for the past 10 years and Abdoulaye Diakite is a master djembe drummer from West Africa. Rootsy Records was created out of a desire to preserve the ancient traditional djembe drumming from the Bamana ethnic group of West Africa. Much of the ancient culture of West Africa is being lost through the process of Westernization. Efforts must be taken to preserve the cultural and ethnomusicological heritage of the people. The mission of Rootsy Records is to preserve the ancient culture of djembe drumming for future generations to use as a reference. If the old masters are not recorded now, what they have could be lost.

Djembe drumming has grown in popularity over the last 10 years by leaps and bounds throughout the world. The djembe is a native drum from the Wasolo region of Mali, West Africa. The drum is hundreds of years old. Much of the popular music from Wasolo is now at the top of world music charts. There is something very special about the music coming from the Wasolo region of West Africa. The djembe is at the heart of it.

The djembe has taken over as the most popular hand drum worldwide. This was a position that was previously held by the latin conga drum. Rootsy Records is the first and only record label devoted completely to traditional djembe drumming. We record field recordings directly in West Africa of traditional grandmasters of the djembe. Rootsy Records is a one-stop-shop for all your djembe drumming needs.
