How To Add A Song At Tapegerm

PAiA DIY music electronics
PAiA has been in business since the early 1970's producing high quality music electronics, from bare-bones kits to completely assembled products. My first synthesizer hardware was from them, wayyy back around 1974 and I still have a number of their products in my synthesizer "studio". Even if you have never handled a soldering iron and don't intend to, their site is worth visiting just for browsing. I highly recommend them. Also: I would rate their customer service A+++.

Crediting Projects
Fellow Tapegermers, when you credit a Project, do not forget the hyphen. For example, Project 27, the Purpose Project should be credited "Project-27". Otherwise Jamroom won't connect it to the Project page.

Dave's Production Basics #1
Programs used
Audio Editing: Sound Forge 4.5
Looper/Tracker: Acid 3.0
You'll have to interpret for your individual programs
I am going to show how to make a sound file seem fuller or have more presence.
First start with the sound file how-to_1-1.wav. It has a decent sound to it, a nice spread in the frequency spectrum and is a stereo file .
1) Load the file in your audio editor.
http://www.davefuglewicz.com/howto/01/how-to_1-01.jpg
2) Create two new mono files.
http://www.davefuglewicz.com/howto/01/how-to_1-02.jpg
http://www.davefuglewicz.com/howto/01/how-to_1-03.jpg
3) Select All of the left channel of how-to_1-1.wav and copy to the clipboard (CTRL-C).
http://www.davefuglewicz.com/howto/01/how-to_1-04.jpg
4) Click on one of the new files and do a Paste (CTRL-V).
http://www.davefuglewicz.com/howto/01/how-to_1-05.jpg
5) Save the file as how-to_1-1_left.wav.
http://www.davefuglewicz.com/howto/01/how-to_1-06.jpg
6) Repeat this for the right channel creating how-to_1-1_right.wav
7) Now there are three sound files
8 ) The two mono files can be modified with effects. There are many possible effects that can be added: chorus, echo, flange, distortion, graphic equalization. For the sake of simplicity, I'll describe how I add
echo. When I add echo like this, I won't include any of the original source, it will just be the modified sounds. I also save the file to a new name; how-to_1-1_left_echo.wav. Every time I modify a file I save it to a new name as a way to back up my files as I work with them.
http://www.davefuglewicz.com/howto/01/how-to_1-07.jpg
9) Now I have the original sound file, a mono-left-echo file and a mono-right-echo file. I'll load all three into my looping program, (I use Acid 3.0). The mono-echo files will have their volume set from -3 to -6 db lower then the original. Then I'll add panning to the mono files, from full left to full right. The two files will almost mirror each other, I intentionally offset the "mirror" points to introduce some randomness.
http://www.davefuglewicz.com/howto/01/how-to_1-08.jpg
10) This process can be repeated with different effects. On some of my compositions I'll have more than one iteration of this technique, I adjust the sound levels so some of the effects are very subtle and not very audible, they might be -10 db less than the original files. However, when all these add up it really thickens the sound and gives it real good presence.
-->please comment (2)
"Thanks Bryan. I don't do anything special to avoid phasing, actually that is part of what I go after. I don't calculate out how the panning will produce phasing and possible beat frequencies. It just seems to work out. The production of secondary frequencies seems to have the effect of pulling it together. I apologize if that's vague, it's kind of hard to describe right now since I'm not used to explaining it on a verbal level. However, listening with headphones to my compositions will illustrate what I go after. For example, my composition "One" is a prime example oh how the various panning techniques successfully work together to enhance and elevate the listeners experience."--
David Fuglewicz (on 04/14/12 22:10:13)
"It's interesting to know how you approach this as I've never done it this way myself. If I want a thicker sound I'll often play something twice and hard pan them. I used to always do that with guitar in rock music recording on 4-track cassette, but don't often do that any longer. Your synths always sound so good, do you take any special pains to avoid phasing with this technique?"--

New Sources files
In 1990 I composed a piece called "Every Electric Part Of You" releasing it in 1992 on a cassette album of the same name. While reviewing unreleased material of that era, for inclusion on my forthcoming posting of that cassette album to archive.org I came across the first version of "Every Electric Part Of You", which included quite a few segments from a sound effects record I had. I decided against developing it further because of the copyright issue and wanting to be all "me". Over the past couple nights I have created some source files that are all me from that first version and have posted them to the Sources page at Tapegerm.com. Number five features one if the rare occasions where I play guitar. Go get them and do something.

B. Serrano's free VST's
B. Serrano has authored some amazing VST's that are available for free. I have used/am using six of the VST's for the last month or so and I wholeheartedly recommend them. They are very versatile and the user interface is very easy to use. My favorite (so far) is the Adonis VST. I think it comes very close to the sound of an ARP 2600. I should know, I have owned a 2600 for about thirty years. Go get some.

Two files for Hidden Voices.
I've added two files to the Hidden Voices project. They are a recording of my printer starting up and an electric shoe polisher. While I haven't tried slowing the files down, I think they are good candidates for this project.

New Open Loops from Dave
I've added the four loops I used to create the sounds for "Beautiful (Skin Deep Mix)" to my Open Loop folder. I also deleted some older ones from 2010 but will be adding them to my TG FTP folder. A song for Mr. McGee's 50th birthday celebration. A massive event I cannot attend.
Aided and abetted on this by the Mentally Anguished one, Chris Phinney and Mr. Action himself; Charles Rice Goff III. This also features a loop which will be part of my next Open Loop extravaganza, stay tuned, so this does follow the TG Rulez of Misconduct. It also features a no name science clip that I'm sure is in the public domain. And I do believe a possible surprise visit by Burl Ives.
